Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU

The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU replaces the former Directive 97/23/EC since 19th July 2016.

The Directive applies to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure PS greater than 0,5 bar.

The pressure equipment in the scope of the Directive is classified in category from I to IV, according to ascending level of hazard in accordance with Annex II of the Directive, based on the maximum allowable pressure (bar), volume of vessel, nominal diameter of piping and type of working fluid. Generally, the greater the pressurized volume and applied pressure, the higher the category. For equipment belongs to category I, manufacturer can perform the conformity assessment by himself. However, for equipment belongs the Category II to IV, the involvement of a Notified Body is required.

The conformity assessment module to comply with the PED is decided according to the category of the equipment. A module defines the frequency of inspection during the manufacturing process of equipment. The modules are divided from A to H and the closer to H, the higher hazard equipment catagory and the higher frequency of inspections by a Notified Body.

Manufacturer must follow the conformity assessment procedure according to the category in which the equipment is classified. The module is determined by the PED category as in the following table.

Category Module
Category I A
Category II A2 D1 E1
Category III B (Design type) + D B (Design type) + F B (Production type) + E B (Production type) + C2 H
Category IV B (Production type) + D B (Production type) + F G H1

The contents of modules are as follows.

A Internal Production Control E Quality Assurance for Final Inspection & Test
A2 Internal Production Control + Supervised pressure equipment checks E1 Quality Assurance for Final Inspection & Test
B (Design type) EU-Type Examination F Product Verification
B (Production type) EU-Type Examination G Unit Verification
C2 Conformity to Type + Supervised pressure equipment checks at random intervals H Full Quality Assurance
D Quality Assurance for Production, Final Inspection & Test H1 Full Quality Assurance + Design Examination + Special Surveillance of the Final Assessment
D1 Quality Assurance for Production, Final Inspection & Test

With many experiences as a Notified Body for the PED, Apave’s qualified experts can support you fulfill all responsibilities to obtain the PED certification and ensure compliance of your pressure equipment with the Pressure Equipment Directive.
